POETRY ANALYSIS Argumentative Essay It is possible to compare and contrast poetry from different literary periods by selecting a poem from each period and examining its use of structure, style, and imagery to enhance its theme. In the Elizabethan period, â€Å"Lullaby,† by Richard Rowlands; in the Romantic period, Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s â€Å"Youth and Age;† in the Victorian period, â€Å"A Child’s Laughter,â€Å" by Algernon Charles Swinburne; and in the Modern period, Jessica Hagedorn’s â€Å"Sorcery,† the reader will come to the conclusion that they have minor similarities as well as significant differences in the areas of structure, style, theme and imagery.The Romantic poem called â€Å"Youth and Age,† by Samuel T. Coleridge and the Modern poem, â€Å"Sorcery,† by Jessica Hagedorn are similar in structure. Out of these two poems, neither one of them have stanzas that have a set number of lines, nor do they have set rhyme schemes. For example in â€Å"Yo uth and Age,† there are three stanzas which contain at first seventeen lines, then twenty-one lines and finally eleven lines. In comparison, â€Å"Sorcery† has seven stanzas with a varying number of lines in each stanza. Thus, these poems are free verses. In Algernon C. Swinburne’s â€Å"A Child’s Laughter,† he uses his own particular rhyme scheme to portray the message of his poem. Each stanza consists of five lines and every fifth line rhymes. For example, in the fifth line of the first stanza the speaker states, â€Å"All sweet sounds together† and in the fifth line of the second stanza the speaker states, â€Å"Wind in warm wan weather.† In Richard Rowlands’ â€Å"Lullaby† there is also a pattern. Each stanza consists of six lines and every fifth and sixth line is the same through out the poem. The fear produced by the telescreens lead the people expose themselves to the eyes of the party, which ultimately leads them to betray themselves .The party overwhelms the minds capacity by a constant stream of propaganda coming out of the telescreen at all hours of the day allowing the party to completely dominate the minds of the people, taking away the potential of individual thought. Betrayal in the society George Orwell created in 1984 was expected. Through the domination of the individual thought, and their inability to resist that oppression, betrayal of one’s comrades was only natural. Individual thought was so greatly overshadowed by the party’s constant stream of propaganda in the novel that there was no place for it in the minds of the citizens. The Life of William Shakespeare England's most talented and well know poet and dramatist was born on April 23, 1564, at Stratford-upon-Avon, located in the cetre of England. His father, John, was a glove-maker and wool dealer involved with money lending. His mother Mary Arden was the daughter of a Farmer. William was the third out of eight children whom all died young. His father became Mayor in 1568, after serving on the town council for many years. William went to a junior school before going to the Grammar School when he was 7. There he learned how to speak and write Latin. No one knows what he did after he left school at the age of 14. In November 1582 he married Anne Hathaway. He was 18 and she was 26. They had 3 children. May 1583 they had Susanna then two years later had twins, Hamnet and Judith. Hamnet died at the age of 11. Susanna married a physician in 1607, and Shakespeare's other daughter married to a vintner in 1616. There was a gap in his life where no one had any evidence of him or his wife. Between 1585 and 1592. All people know, is that he left Stratford for London either in 1586 or 87. His reputation was established in London around 1592. His first play he wrote was in 1593, it was called Venus and Adonis. They were published later on in 1609. His success in London made him very wealthy so he moved into a large home in Stratford.
